What's all the fuss about?
Okay, first watch the video - it's hilarious!
You may have seen these commercials on tv, this attempt to make minivans "cool". Now I saw this on Facebook where a friend had posted it, a friend who says she will not drive a minivan, just thought the video was funny. I commented that she will want one soon as she has one child and a few more on the way. To which another of her friends commented that she better not change her mind - "I'll never be a minivan mom!"
I think this is funny - this concept that you can't have a car because it has a stigma associated with it. What is a "minivan mom"? Somebody who is a mom and drives a minivan?
Yep, that's me. And proud of it.
I just think it is ridiculous to refuse sanity comfort just because you don't want others to think of you in a certain way. When Caleb was born we had a Nissan Pathfinder and I really loved it! However, a few weeks of squeezing the baby seat through the hinged doors, then going around and opening the other door, picking up the 2 year old and chunking hoisting him into his seat, I was done. I gave Sam the go ahead to research minivans (he loves the research part). We decided on a Honda Odyssey as we could get it cheaper than the other minivans (weird, I know) and it had great resale value (after looking at used minivans that's really a joke, used minivans are trashed :).
So here I am, a minivan mom. Am I any different than I was when I was driving a 1978 Nissan diesel pickup that you had to wait 5 minutes for the glow plugs to warm up before you drove it (I always wondered what I would do if somebody was trying to attack me and I was trying to get away - "Hold on, Mr. Attacker, I have to let my glow plugs warm up before I can try to frantically escape") or when I went through 2 Toyota Corollas, or 2 Audis (loved my silver A4) or the Mini Cooper S (Sam tried to convince me we could keep this car when I got pregnant with Carter but the only way to get the baby seat in the back was to turn it upside down and the way our kids spit up - it wouldn't have been pretty) or the Pathfinder? Nope.
I am not my car. I am a Christian, conservative, pre homeschooling, still loves Def Leppard, non-mom jean wearing Mom. Some may say that IS a minivan mom and who they don't want to be.
I say it's just me. Now I'm off to push the button on my key fob so my almost 3 and almost 5 year old can climb in the van, close their doors and buckle themselves in their seats.
Wipe up the drool, you're dripping on my clean floor.
